Smogmaggedon, 2023
The Day The Sky Turned A Thick Orange.
The Day The Sky Turned A Thick Orange.

Who on the East Coast or the upper Midwest will soon forget the Smogmageddon of 2023, when Canada’s northern Softwood Boreal forests exploded in fire, both in the upper Northwest and in Quebec. Drought conditions, hotter overall temperatures, and poor or non-existent forest management provided the fuel. Mother Nature brought the fuses in the form of High intensity electrical storms.

High winds then drove the smoke down and over the eastern seaboard where then it stalled, providing days with a dense, orange haze.
Wildland (forest) fires are not an irregular occurrence in Canada. But the extent and ferocity of these fires of 2023 are rare, and the intensity and numerousness are attributed to Climate Change.

Of course, wildfires in-and-of-themselves are part of the natural ecosystem. They only become a problem when lives & property are threatened. Or when so much smoke is belched out  into the atmosphere that the air quality for the living is reduced significantly.

Unless these fires can be brought under control, the chance for Smogmageddon II remains a possibility.

And Smog-o-thons are not a new phenomenon. The word “Smog” was actually coined way back in 1905 by Dr. Henry Antoine Des Voeux. He combined the words “Fog” and ”Smoke” (a portmanteau) in a paper presented at a meeting of the Congress of the Royal Institute of Public Health in London (Public Health Congress) conveniently entitled “Fog and Smoke”. It described the common occurrence in British cities & towns by then of smoke from burning mostly coal to heat their homes and thus combining with the country’s famous fogs.

The burning of both wood and coal – caused by Humans or Nature – produces carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and ground level ozone. These chemicals are a hazard to health. Inhaling these particulates can lead to severe respiratory problems and blood poisoning which can result in hospitalization and/or death. It is also a mistake to assume that this smog is somehow safer than the smog produced by burning petroleum – the primary source of air pollution in Southern California  – it is not.

We at A+A Price, are dedicated to the responsible use of fire in our daily lives. We include stark warnings on our packaging about not burning charcoal or wood for barbecue in enclosed places – where high concentrations of the poisonous gas can accumulate. And our 100% Natural Wood, and Odorless Hydrocarbon Firestarters are becoming the preferred method to lighting charcoal grills for both safety and culinary reasons. The Firestarters are easy to light and create an even burn that is easier to control than using lighter fluid.

We invite you today to decide to stock our products and brand them as Private Label offerings. Now is a great time to convert to 100% Natural Firestarters.
