The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) was founded in 1993 as a result of the concerns of a growing variety of International NGOs regarding the effects of industrial logging and the conversion to farmland of the world's forests. As an International NGO, The FSC was founded by a group of stakeholders such as The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Greenpeace, then promptly developed a market-driven, certification system based on 10 environmental, social, and economic principles supplemented by 57 listed criteria that are used to evaluate the performance of forest management practices. The FSC regularly reviews the standards and updates them accordingly, reflecting current science, and political developments.

This certification system is designed to provide environmentally concerned consumers with the collective power to ensure the wood-based product they are purchasing were produced in responsible and sustainable ways. In 30 years, the FSC has grown to become one of the world's leading forest certification NGOs along with the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) and the American Tree Farm System (ATFS) in the United States, as well as the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) at an international scale. It is considered the go to leader in this category of national forest certification systems having over 195 million hectares of forests under certification in over 85 countries, and with 54,000 firms worldwide having achieved Cost of Custody (COC) Certification.

Climate change and CO2 pollution are significantly mitigated by healthy, well managed forests. Using the numbers obtained worldwide, in the years 2015-17, it is estimated that the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere attributed to Deforestation constituted almost 10% of worldwide emissions. Deforestation – unsanctioned, irresponsible, and illegal logging plays a large role in effecting our management of Climate Change.
