One of the longest surviving species of anything now alive is trees. Something that can be recognized today as a tree emerged about 360 million years ago. And it has survived in its basic & peculiar carbon-based cellular form through the gamut of challenging environments ¬ swamp, forest, steppe, desert, mountain, tundra, seabed, etc., ever since. They even have managed to predate cockroaches.

Wood has been our primary source of energy and housing up until the industrial Revolution. There is significant evidence that concern for wood as an indispensable resource was widespread, from Ancient Rome & China through Middle Ages, Stewardship and the threat of deforestation were implemented to secure this critical, renewable source of energy, home construction, and ship building.

The coming of the Industrial Revolution, along with rising populations only put more pressure on the sustainability of Europe’s forests. Even the increasing reliance on coal for more than warming the hearth didn’t impede our growing dependance on lumber. Shortages had been seen before, but the expanding economies of the Industrial Revolution and the emergence of Capitalism  throughout the 17th century led to an explosion of demand accompanied by a significant rise in the price for wood*.

Over the last two centuries, the need to address deforestation has only accelerated. Timber is still a crucially vital resource. The industry is currently experiencing 10.3% Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) The Covid-19 Pandemic caused a relatively short-termed disruption to the industry but it has quietly recovered quickly. Forest Certification, the act of labelling a timber harvester’s work regained popularity, particularly with the founding of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), in 1993.

The FSC – The NGO that Certifies all Samba wood-based Biomass Firestarter products  – Wood-Wool & Wood-Wax Cubes – is just one of the more prominent Forest Certification Agencies at the state, national & international levels. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) ,and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) are two other NGOs addressing responsible forestry. While FSC was formed by prominent environmental groups, the SFI is an industry sponsored program and PEFC is a European program that combines stakeholders from both industry and conservation.
